Pre-paid funeral plans, explained

Pre-paid funeral plans, explained

A pre-paid plan is a contract for a funeral, bought and paid for in advance. People take one out for two reasons: to fix the cost, and to spare the people they leave behind from having to make decisions in the worst week of their lives. Here is how ours works.

1. What you choose

You choose the type of funeral (traditional, simple, or woodland), the coffin, the vehicles, and any wishes you want recorded: music, readings, who should be told, where the ashes should go. None of it is binding on the day; your family can change anything. It is a record, not a rule.

2. Where the money goes

Your payment does not sit in our bank account. It is held in an independent trust that is regulated, audited every year and cannot be touched by us or by our creditors. If we were ever to close, the trust would pay another funeral director to carry out your plan.

3. What it costs

Plans start at £1,395 for a simple cremation and £3,450 for a traditional funeral, paid in one sum or over up to ten years. Third-party costs such as the crematorium fee can be included as a contribution. If you cancel within thirty days you get everything back; after that, everything less a £150 administration fee.
